Commonly Misunderstood Verses

Introduction

While I am confident about the following verses being taken out of context in their popular usage, this does not make the conclusion automatically false. The same conclusion may actually be taught elsewhere in Scripture.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 - Appearance of Evil or Evil's Appearance?

Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Stay away from anything that even looks evil.

Stay away from evil no matter what it looks like.

1 Timothy 6:10 - Money or Love?

For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil

Often misquoted as: "Money is the root of all evil."

Money is evil and we are not to have anything to do with it.

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

Psalm 118:24 - Every Day or Single event?

This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Today is a day God has created so we should rejoice in it.

The "day" that the Lord made is the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
See verses 22-24 also Acts 4:10-12..

Proverbs 23:7 - Positive Thinking or Warning?

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

Often misquoted as: "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is."

What we are is determined by our minds; by our thinking, any limitations we have are self-imposed by the way we choose to think about ourselves and our world.

It actually reads,  "Do not eat the bread of a miser, nor desire his delicacies; for as he thinks in his heart, so is he. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you." So this proverb is advising us to be careful when a miser asks us to share a meal with him. In other words, don't be fooled by the words of a deceitful person, because as he thinks in his heart, so he is.

Matthew 18:19 - Unity or Separation?

"Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven."

We can have anything if we can "agree" on it.
(or) This is how we are to "bind" the powers of darkness.

This refers to church leaders having authority in their discipline. What has been agreed to with regard to discipline is what has already been set in heaven.

Matthew 18:20 - Church Worship or Church Authority?

"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."

Jesus is present when we gather in groups for prayer and Bible study.

Jesus is present when the church exercises discipline (see above verse).

1 Corinthians 2:9 - Anticipation of Heaven or Revelation of Christ?

Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.

We can't imagine what heaven is going to be like.

The mystery of Christ was hidden until now . . . God has revealed Him to us through His Spirit.

Isaiah 55:8-9 - Human Logic or Immorality?

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD.  "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways,
and My thoughts than your thoughts.

God has His own way of thinking about things.  Our logic is limited.  God has His own logic.

It is the ways and thoughts of the wicked that God's ways and thoughts are contrasted, not the ways and thoughts of human logic in general.  It is a moral statement, not a logical one. See vs. 7 "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts."

Philippians 4:13 - Christian Motivation or Endurance?

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

We can do anything we set our mind to.

We can be content in any circumstance, even when we suffer and lack.

Isaiah 14:12-15 12 - Satan or Sennacherib?

How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.'  Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.

This is the story of an angel named Lucifer who became Satan when he fell from heaven while trying to overthrow God.

"Lucifer" is not the proper name of an angelic being. "Lucifer" is a transliteration of the Latin translation for "Light Bringer." The Greek words are "Day Star."  While this may reflect the story of Satan's fall (i.e. Luke 10:18; Rev. 12), this prophecy refers to King Sennacherib.

Romans 8:16 - Our Witness or God's?

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Refers to a subjective experience from the Spirit whereby He bears witness "to" our spirits, comfirming to us that we are God's children.

The verse actually says that God's Spirit bears witness "with"our spirits; not "to" our spirits (Deuteronomy 19:15; Matthew 18:16; 2 Corinthians 13:1).

Revelation 3: 15 - 16 - Unsaved better than Saved?

I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

God would rather we not believe in Him at all than to be "Lukewarm Christians".

Both cold and hot water flowed into Laodicea - and they were both useful. The first for its refreshing properties, and the second for healing. Sometimes the water arrived lukewarm and was spit out for it was not good for either. God does not wish anyone to perish.

1 Corinthians 2:2 - Anti-Intellectualism or Anti-Immaturity?

For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

The crucifixion should be the only thing we preach.

Paul was having to put up with the immaturity of the Corinthians and thus kept his preaching elementary things (Acts 20:27).

Revelation 3:20 - The hearts of sinners or saved?

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Jesus is "knocking" at the door of the heart of the lost.

Jesus is calling believers back to fellowship with God.

Ephesians 4:26 - Settle anger or Stay angry?

do not let the sun go down on your wrath

Settle all disputes before you go to sleep.

Be angry, and do not sin. Be angry against sin and always be vigilant. Never let the day of your anger against sin come to an end.
