Science and the Bible
Introduction
Science has long been a friend of the Bible. Hard
to believe today isn't it? But in fact, until the advent of "Darwinism"
there was not a great animosity between the Bible and the scientific community.
In fact, many of the greatest scientists of all time have been Bible-believing
Christians who, because of their belief in a God of order, began their
study of the world and how it worked. Many people have recently become
confused as to the Bible's certainty due to claims that science has "disproved"
what it says. A little "tract" was made up a hundred years ago or so called
"Ten Scientific facts that prove the Bible is false". How many of those
"facts" are held by the scientific community today? Zero. Although people
on both sides of the debate between scientific theory and theology should
beware, the fact is that the Bible's scientific accuracy is astonishing.
Round Earth
Some critics
claim that the Bible teaches a flat earth, but there is no such verse
in the Bible. Many millennia before Christopher Columbus proved
his theory of a spherical earth, one of the oldest books on earth (the
book of Job) had already proclaimed the earth to be round (26:10). As
early as the writings of Isaiah (around 800 B.C.) we see the same thing.
When Isaiah, speaking of God, said: It
is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth (40:22) he used
the Hebrew word khug
meaning sphericity or roundness. It is also used
in Proverbs 8:27 which says, He set a compass
upon the face of the deep." Today scientists all agree with the Bible
in its teaching of a round earth but those throughout history who believed
the Bible should not have been surprised.
Life from Life
Remember how we all laughed in science class
at the idea of "spontaneous generation"? This idea (brought to an end
by Louis Pasteur), that flies grew out of garbage and moths out of old
clothing, was debunked by the Bible in its very first book. Every creature
reproduces according to its kind. We do not get flies from garbage or
moths from clothing (or men from apes):
"And God said, Let the land produce living creatures
according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground,
and wild animals, each according to its kind. And it was so."
-Genesis 1:24
Numbering the Stars
The total
number of stars visible to the naked eye is perhaps 4,000, counting all
that are visible from earth. Yet the Bible had said that the host
of heaven cannot be numbered (Jeremiah 33:22). Before the invention
of the telescope, this must have seemed like a serious scientific mistake
in the Bible. In fact, if current estimates are correct, the stars cannot
be numbered. If one could count 10 numbers per second, it would take him
a thousand-million-billion years to count up them all.
The Sun, Earth, and the Center of the Universe
Psalm 19:6
(His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit
unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof")
is claimed by some critics to support the notion that the sun revolves
around the earth. First, no one knows where the center of the universe
is - for all we know it could even be the earth. Second, we all, even
scientists, use phrases like sunrise and sunset
because from our viewpoint the sun does rise in the morning, move across
the sky, and set in the evening. Navigators, surveyors, and astronomers
commonly base their calculations on the assumption that the earth is the
center of a great celestial sphere. Furthermore, it is well known that
our own galaxy is moving with respect to other galaxies. The suns
circuit is from one end of the heavens to the other!
"He stretcheth
out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing"
-Job 26:7.
Water and Wind
Some of the most ancient documents that
make up the Bible even described the water cycle - parts of which are
not visible.
"The wind goeth
toward the south, and turneth about unto the north;
it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according
to his circuits . . .
All the rivers
run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence
the rivers come, thither they return again"
-Eccles. 1:6-7.
"To make the
weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure"
-Job 28:25.
Conclusion
THE issue in science today is, of course,
the theory of evolution. Space does not permit even a cursory look at
all the arguments and counter-arguments and counter-counter- arguments
that exist today over this theory, but it is important to see that the
issue is far from being settled. But with a presupposition of naturalism
(that only natural causes can be considered scientific) is to remove God
without first showing proof of His non-existence. This is not very
scientific at all.
"The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of His hands."
