Rated R for violence
and language. There is a lot of cussing but it is your basic stupid
street kind. Racist lingo abounds as well.
Story
The story revolves around
the disintegration of a father and son as the son grows up in the
Bronx right next door to a bunch of mob-types. He idolizes their
leader and after helping him out with a murder rap the leader sort
of adopts him, much to the chagrin of his father. The son falls
in love with a black girl (a HUGE no-no for his Italian friends
and family, especially in that time period) and has to deal with
that as well.
Suppositions
I do not know a whole lot
about the Bronx in the 50's but it seems pretty believable. The
reactions to the cross-ethnic relationship, as well as the relationship
itself, are not explained very well though. The main theme is that
family (of whatever kind) is important and deserves loyalty.
Significance
This is a positive movie
regarding family and loyalty. One by one the son realizes that his
real friend and mentor has been his father all along, even though
he rebels against throughout the movie. The honest working man is
upheld as having attained the good life even up against the alleged
good life of the gangster.
